THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HELPS THE NEW YORK YOUNG REPUBLICAN CLUB CELEBRATE FREEDOM
On July 7, The New York Young Republican Club met at the historic Fraunces Tavern in New York City to not only to wish a happy birthday to President George W. Bush, but also to celebrate the 228th birthday of the nation. The event was a rousing success. Associated Press reporter Sara Kugler was on hand to witness the festivities, which also included an auction and a tribute to President Ronald Reagan.
In the story she wrote about the evening, Kugler described the Young Republican Club's dedicated and diverse membership: "They come from wealthy Manhattan neighborhoods and blue collar Queens streets; the roster includes social conservatives and gays. Many say their parents are Democrats." Members shared with Kugler what it's like to carry the Republican banner in a liberal, traditionally-Democrat city like New York. Many Young Republicans echoed Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's encouraging words from the 92nd Annual Young Republican Club dinner held the previous week -- just because New York City has a long history as a liberal beachhead, Bloomberg told members, "That doesn't mean you should give up. This city loves you and this city wants to be led."The New York Young Republican Club, Inc. is a not-for-profit political organization that exists to bring Republicans aged 18-40 together to discuss the Republican Party platform and aid the Republican Party in the education of the public about the Republican agenda and the promotion of Republican candidates for office.
