THE NEW YORK YOUNG REPUBLICAN CLUB, INC. RESPONDS TO SENATOR FRITZ HOLLINGS' PRESS RELEASE:
The New York Young Republican Club ("NYYRC") finds Senator Earnest "Fritz" Hollings' (D-SC) opinion on the war in Iraq, expressed in the his press release dated May 6, 2004, despicable. Senator Hollings' contention that military action in Iraq was undertaken by President George W. Bush not to topple the regime of a bloodthirsty tyrant, but to only to court the Jewish vote is appalling. An elected official like Senator Hollings should have more respect for our president and those of the Jewish faith both here and abroad.
Military action in Iraq was pursued only as a last resort, and the man who set the war in motion was not George W. Bush, but Saddam Hussein, who - thanks to our president and the brave men and women of the American military - was captured cowering in a rat hole, and who now sits in prison awaiting the justice he so deserves. While George W. Bush wasn't the first president to recognize the gathering threat of Mr. Hussein and the weapons at his disposal - even Senator Hollings admits to that in his statement - this administration was the first to put Hussein under lock and key.
The NYYRC finds it ironic - if not at all surprising - that Senator Hollings praised former President Clinton for punishing Hussein's regime with a missile strike in 1993, yet makes no mention of not only Hussein's capture, but also the fact that millions were liberated by Operation Iraqi Freedom. Hollings insists that "might isn't right" in dealing with terrorism in the Middle East these days, but according to Hollings, military action was a perfectly appropriate avenue for Clinton to pursue. The road to peace in Iraq will not be smooth - President Bush said so before the first bullet was ever fired. However, the most searing lesson of September 11, 2001 is that following the path of least resistance and ignoring the terrible reality that there are those like Hussein and Osama Bin Laden that seek to do us harm, comes with too terrible a price. The New York Young Republican Club, Inc. is a not-for-profit political organization that exists to bring Republicans aged 18-40 together to discuss the Republican Party platform and aid the Republican Party in the education of the public about the Republican agenda and the promotion of Republican candidates for office.
