THE NEW YORK YOUNG REPUBLICAN CLUB, INC EXPRESSES OUTRAGE OVER GORE SPEECH

New York, NY - The New York Young Republican Club, Inc. (NYYRC) expresses outrage over the accusations made by Al Gore earlier today at Constitution Hall regarding the Bush Administration.

Earlier today, Al Gore accused the Bush administration of overstepping the Constitution and alleged that they are a threat to the balance of power and ultimately, to our Democracy. In his speech, he refers to the Administration¹s "massive domestic spying program" and accuses the National Security Administration of spying on a large number of Americans.

Multiple sources, however, including The Weekly Standard and Jonah Goldberg of National Review Online, noted that, according to State of War, "about 500 people" living in the United States have had their communication tapped, or "1.7 ten-thousandths of 1% of the U.S. population," have been affected by this "massive" program.

Gore came very near to accusing the President of breaking the law by saying: "what we do know about this pervasive wiretapping virtually compels the conclusion that the President of the United States has been breaking the law repeatedly and persistently." He continued: "A President who breaks the law is a threat to the very structure of our government."

NYYRC President Dennis Cariello stated, "former Vice President Gore seems to have completely erased the Clinton years from his memory." President Cariello continued, "one would think that someone who railed against those who criticized the office of the President in a time of peace would exhibit more discretion and respect for the office in this time of war. I also find it amazing that he has chosen to speak about this wiretapping Œcrime¹ something notably sanctioned by the federal courts while forgetting that he vigorously defended another President that was disbarred for committing the crime of perjury."

The NYYRC is cognizant of the balance between liberty and security and respectful of the price paid by so many now and in years past to secure both for the current generation. As President Cariello stated, "As Young Republicans, we are proud Americans who revere our Constitution and Bill of Rights and the freedoms and limitations on government prescribed therein. The alleged incursions on liberty, however, were limited to a small subset of individuals that reportedly had prior connections to al Qaeda terrorists. Considering the needs of the war on terror, and the limited employment of these wire taps, we are proud to support our President in this time of war and we are thankful that we do not have to rely on Al Gore for protection."

The New York Young Republican Club, Inc., is a not-for-profit political organization that exists to bring Republicans aged 18-40 together to discuss the Republican Party platform and aid the Republican Party in the education of the public about the Republican agenda and the promotion of Republican candidates for office.
